So far, in the Korean War, there had been a lot more defending than there had been of attacking by South Korea and the allied forces. But, while everything else was going on in September, General McArthur was pressing for his plan to land troops behind enemy lines at Inchon. This plan was codenamed Operation Chromite and was planned so his troops could surround the North Korean ones from both directions. For this plan, he would land the troops at the port of Inchon. Other American military leaders thought this plan was too risky, because of factors such as the rough tide and narrow channel, but General McArthur thought that was one of the perks for the plan. If it was so difficult to land there North Koreans would never expect it! The amphibious landing* was given an official nod to go ahead with the plan and it changed the course of the Korean War!
On the 25th of September, 1950, U. N troops recaptured the port and pushed into the heart of South Korea to retake Seoul a day later! Allied troops converged onto the North Korean army which resulted in many casualties for the North Koreans. Not all was over yet though...
Weapons used :
North Korea - 19 aircrafts, one fortress, one patrol boat (relatively small and used for defensive coastal duties) and an unknown number of artillery. South Korea and allies - one armed sampan (flat bottomed, Chinese, wooden boat), seven destroyers (fast, maneuverable intended to escort larger ships and four cruisers.
Amphibious landing - a military operation where navy, air, sea and land forces combine which is organised for an invasion. The amphibious landing of General McArthur's is probably the biggest in history.
